A dental deep clean. What does it mean?
A deep clean (root surface debridement) is often required to treat periodontal (gum) disease. Root surface debridement ( RSD) involves thoroughly cleaning the roots of your teeth to remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar that have built up below the gum line. This process helps to smooth out the surfaces of the roots, which makes it harder for bacteria to reattach and cause problems in the future. By getting rid of these harmful substances, your gums can heal and reattach more firmly to the teeth.
Think of it as giving your tooth roots a really thorough scrub to keep your gums happy and healthy!
RSD is usually carried out with local anaesthetic and teeth can become a little temperature sensitive for a short period post operatively. This usually settles in time and is helped by the regular use of sensitive toothpaste.
